                            Suspension magnetization roasting (SMR) is a new process where the iron ore powder completes a reduction reaction at fluidization state with using high temperature, where a weak magnetic iron ore is transformed into strong magnetic magnetite or maghemite. The separation is then carried out by using the difference in magnetic properties between minerals to achieve separation of the iron and gangue minerals. SMR is an innovative technology developed for use with complex refractory iron ore such as fine-grained hematite, siderite, limonite, specularite, high phosphorus oolitic hematite since SMR can achieve excellent separation indexes with these materials.

                            Suspension magnetizations roasting technology efficiently uses complex refractory iron ore resources such as poor and mixed hematite, siderite and limonite, and greatly improves resource utilization. Promotion and application of this SMR technology can revitalize more than 10 billion tons of unusable refractory iron ore that stockpiled in China alone. The arrival of the latest know-how is a major technological revolution in the field of iron ore processing in China along with the rest of the world.

                            Since 2007, Northeastern University has combined mineral processing, metallurgy and fluid mechanics related to complex mineral composition to that resulted in a break through from the traditional concept of magnetization roasting and resourcefully initiated a new technology of "pre-oxidation, reduction and re-oxidation" through use of suspension roasting. After ten years of continuous effort and extensive research work on basic theories, techniques and equipment, and through obtaining numerous patents, the technical gap has been filled in the field of iron ore suspension magnetization roasting both at home and abroad. At present, a new type of industrial equipment for the suspension magnetization roasting process has been successfully developed with a capacity of 2 million tones/annually. The equipment has the capabilities and potential of large production capacity with pollution-free operation, at a relatively low production cost and high degree of automation than currently available.

                            As a result the Chaoyang NEU Minerals and Metallurgy Institute (CNMMI) was jointly established by Northeastern University and Chaoyang Tianma Group. The institute is located in Chaoyang County Industrial Park, Liaoning Province, and has a complete mineral processing laboratory, laboratory and six pilot test systems. The six pilot-scale systems include suspension magnetization roasting, short-process smelting, high efficiency separation, new equipment development, mineral processing reagent development and mineral material development. The establishment of Chaoyang NEU Minerals and Metallurgy Institute is of great significance for the scientific and technological research, and the development of talent in the field of mining and metallurgy, especially the intensive utilization of (waste) iron ore.

                            In view of different types of iron ore resources, Northeastern University has proposed a variety of efficient solutions based on the new technology of suspension magnetization roasting. For example, a new preconcentration-suspension roasting-magnetic separation process-PSRM has been proposed for low grade, poor quality and impurity iron ore and tailings resources. Aiming The goal is to utilize at the extremely difficult refractory iron ore with their complex gangue minerals, which will increase the reverse flotation desiliconization operation to form a new process of “preconcentration, suspension roasting, magnetic separation and flotation”; For refractory iron ores with high iron grade and single mineral composition, the preconcentration operation can be simplified to form a new process of "dry process powder - suspension roasting - magnetic separation (flotation)".
